NMSU Too Much for Mustang Softball

LAS CRUCES, NM – The Mustangs (32-18-1 overall) could not measure up to the NCAA Division I program of New Mexico State University (NMSU, 27-25 overall) Tuesday afternoon. WNMU dropped both games,10-0 and 4-0.

The Mustangs hung with the Aggies until an explosive inning in each game. In the first game, Western were down early, 3-0, courtesy of a three-run homer by the Aggies.

To the Mustangs delight, NMSU was able to get off only two hits against pitcher Erica Beltran (Mesilla Park, NM, 13-4) in the second and third inning. The bats woke up, though, for NMSU in the fourth. The Aggies were able to capitalize on three Mustang errors that sent seven runners passed home plate.

The Mustangs could not recover in the fifth. Designated player Courtney Reyes (Alamogordo, NM) got the lone hit for Western in the first game.

In the second game, WNMU's Brianne Grommon (Mesa, AZ, 19-9) kept the Mustangs within striking distance, going through six straight batters in the first two innings.

The crowd wok up when the Aggies were able to put a run on the board in the third off of three singles. Western battled, however, and put four hits into play before NMSU scored three more runs in the sixth to seal the victory.

Meredith Drahota (Phoenix, AZ), Antoinette Estrella (Phoenix, AZ), Cory Usher (Monterey, CA), and Debbie Yescas (Sahuarita, AZ) each connected for one hit in the second game.

The Mustangs will travel to Mesa State on Friday to participate in the RMAC tournament. For more information regarding the RMAC softball tournament, please go to www.rmacsports.org.
