Hilo, Hawaii -- Justin Griffin scored 28 points and Justin Dobson recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. But it was the play of Rocky Jorgenson and Chris Young that provided the spark as the University of Hawaii at Hilo beat Western New Mexico University 74-61 on the first day of the Hawaiian Style Classic.
The Vulcans (2-1) opened up leads as large as nine points but saw it dissappear four times. Knotted at 49 apiece, Law put the two sophomore walk-ons on the floor.
Jorgenson went on a five-point scoring spree that put the Vulcans up 54-49. Travis Sober's jumper put the Vulcans up by seven before Jason Jackson answered with a three-pointer for the Mustangs (0-4). Young nailed a three-pointer before Jorgenson went on another five-point binge with a pair of free throws and a three pointer.
The Mustangs were led by Jason Jackson with 14 points and Mike Sells with 13. Kris Taylor was WNMU's leading rebounder with 9.
Jorgenson finished with 13 points and three rebounds. Young had three points and one assist. Terrance Troupe added 11 points and five assists while Travis Sobers added seven points and six assists with no turnovers.
Western New Mexico stays on the island and will face Holy Family at 5 p.m (HT). Holy Family upset sixth-ranked Metro State 56-55 Friday night.
