POMONA, Calif. -- Western New Mexico's volleyball team moved to 5-2 on the year when they handed Indianapolis its first loss of the season, 3-1. Game scores were 33-35, 30-22, 30-24, 30-24. Liz Narkon had a tournament-high 33 kills to go along with 19 digs.
In an earlier match , Te'Ara Epps had 18 kills and hit .500 and Cal State L.A. hit .345 as a team as the Golden Eagles rebounded from Thursday's loss with a 30-27, 30-20, 30-24 win over Western New Mexico on Friday morning in Pomona. CSULA improves to 4-2 while WNMU falls to 4-2.
The match opened sluggish for the Golden Eagles as WNMU hung tough early. The game was tied at 20-20 before CSULA scored six of the next seven points to take a 26-21 lead. A pair of Epps kills ended game one at 30-27.
CSULA led most of game two, but once again needed a late rally to take full control of the game. WNMU narrowed the gap to 19-18 on a service ace, but CSULA rebounded after a timeout to score the next seven points off the serve of Airess Padda, including two aces, to open up a 26-18 margin. A Leslie Smith ace ended game two at 30-20.
Game three was tight early as well, although this time it was WNMU that held the lead much of the way. The Mustangs led 20-19 before a CSULA timeout. After the timeout, the Golden Eagles scored the next four points to take a 23-20 lead. CSULA would eventually score the final three points of the match to win game three, 30-24, and pick up the sweep.
Epps led all players with 18 kills and three block assists while Ashley Hardwick had 11 kills, 11 digs and three blocks. CSULA hit .345 as a team while holding WNMU to .210.
On Saturday, CSULA faces Seattle at 11 a.m. and Indianapolis at 5 p.m.
