While at Western New Mexico University, Trujillo participated in football for three years, track for two years, and baseball for one year. He was All-Conference Honorable Mention in football.

Trujillo graduated from WNMU in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary and Secondary Education and in 1958 with a master’s degree in administration and supervision.

Trujillo is married to Natalia Medrano Trujillo. Together they five children.
