For members of Coach Gunning and Coach Brancheau's 1939 Mustang basketball team, Homecoming 1993 holds a deep, sentimental significance. Arriving at New Mexico State Teacher's College amid the Great Depression and the rising tensions in Europe, the 1939 team was uniquely united by the challenging times. Each player understood that the shadow of World War II loomed large, and the possibility of their involvement in the war was ever-present.
Under the inspiring leadership of Coaches Gunning and Brancheau, the players learned to combine their individual skills for the greater good of the team. There was no room for arrogance or vanity on the court. Through tireless practice, an unbreakable team spirit, and an unwavering determination to overcome every obstacle, the 1939 Mustang team emerged as true champions—both on the court and in life.
The members of that legendary team include:
- Al Suttman
- Bert Smiley
