What about the coach?

5842Coach Beatty says:

"I've spent 26 years at WNMU with 14 trips to the NCAA Championships, multiple Conference and Regional Championship wins and I'm a PGA member. I promise that I understand what's going on, and if I can't find an answer for you, I will find someone that does.

With that said, you would need to understand that I'm a bit of a hard-ass. I'm in my 60's, so I'm not going to be the buddy that the much cooler, just-out-of-college, coach that some other schools have. I'm spending considerable money on you, so, like your future boss, I expect a return on my investment without a lot of coddling. I look at my job as a coach is to provide you with everything I can to make a better player. Whether that's swing instruction, game management, facilities, competition or just someone that has your back, I will be there. BUT, the effort for your improvement  has to come from you. If you're reading this, then you have accomplished a lot as a player. If you need to practice and play tour qualify venues, have the PGA tour fitness van pull up in the dorm parking lot for your workout, and have Butch Harmon video capturing your every swing to see why you blocked it 10 yards, then I'm not your man.  That type of player needs someone other than themselves to get better. Give me your time and effort, and I will provide you the things you need to improve.

I am one of a very few full-time, not-retired, golf coaches in Division II golf. It's my only job. The practices are mostly structured, not the typical 'go play nine and turn your score card in tomorrow.' So if you're not into being 'coached,' this is definitely the wrong place for you.

I was not a college golfer and am not really a 'player,' but I am a Class A member of the PGA and a passionate student of the game. I'm here to relay my 35-plus years of coaching experience to YOU. I don't have any eligibility left, so unlike many coaches, my game is secondary. I have spent a lot of time learning the golf swing and its fundamentals, and I enjoy teaching them. Likewise, I would hope that my players enjoy learning them.

In addition, if you can't stand someone telling you to hit your hybrid down the fairway instead of blasting your driver over the corner so you can make an eagle, we might have some problems. College golf is a TEAM game. Your scores go onto four other guys scorecard, and I have to protect them from moments of greed.

I've had the opportunity to coach All-Americans, players that are now PGA members, tour-level players, and everyone in between. I promise, if you do your job, I'll do mine.

So, what does it take for you to get along with me? That's easy.

First and foremost, your priorities have to be golf and school. One is not more important than the other, and during the season they will take 80% of your time. If they don't, you're going to be in trouble.

Secondly, be honest. The truth may hurt for a few minutes, but I never forget a lie.

Three. Go to class.

Four. Go to practice.

Five. Be a contributing member of the community (university and golf course).

Six. Make sure I see you four or five times a week.

If you follow these rules and work hard in the classroom and at golf, I will be a good friend and a great source for you to draw on during your college years and for the rest of your life."
