Augustana Takes Women's Golf Super Region (Central) #3 Title

ELEPHANT BUTTE, N.M. – Augustana College overtook Colorado Mesa and never looked back on their way to claiming the NCAA Division II Women's Golf Super Region (Central) #3 that concluded Tuesday at the Sierra del Rio Golf Course as the Regional was delayed three-and-a-half hours due to lightning/rain delays.
Augustana posted a pair of 323's to open the Regional and added to that a 309, which was the best round of any on their way to a 955 and a 12-stroke victory over Colorado Mesa. Augustana was paced by Maggie Leland's 233 (77-80-76) as her 76 on the final day was tied for second-best and she finished third overall. They also had two others in the top-ten including Jenny Benoy in fifth with a 237 (81-81-75) and Allie Ostrander in sixth with a 239 (82-80-77). Emily Kvidera was close to the top-ten with a tie for 12th with a 246 and Kelsey Bortnem with a 272 to land in 43rd.
Colorado Mesa grabbed second with a 967 (313-329-325) and were led by Jennifer Hilts throughout all three rounds as she either led or held a share of the lead all three nights on her way to posting a 232 (73-82-77) which tied her for first with Western New Mexico's Faylyn Beyale (Fruitland, NM/Kirtland Central High School). Hilts' 73 during the first round was the best round of the Regional. Colorado Mesa also had Jessica Berve in the top-ten as she tied for seventh with a 240 (81-81-78). Michelle Stripp ended up in 14th with a 247, followed by a 251 from Afton Balling to place in a tie for 20th and Alisa Lindsay in 30th with a 261.
Western New Mexico remained in third and became the third and final team to advance to the National Championships that will be held in Louisville, Ken., May 16-19. Beyale carded a pair of 77's around a 78 to post her 232 and tie for the top spot. Haley Raymond (Socorro, NM/Socorro High School) remained in the top-five claiming a fourth-place finish with a 236 (74-86-76). Rounding out the other two scorers for the Mustangs, Arrianna Estrada (Belen, NM/Belen High School) tied for 17th with a 249 and Bianca Dominguez (Deming, NM/Deming HS) placed 32nd with a 263.
Three individuals also punched their ticket to Nationals, with Paige Schmidt from Winona State going in as the top individual with a 240 (83-77-80) as she placed in a tie for seventh. St Cloud State's Emily Kerber had to wait several hours before finally learning that she would also be going to Louisville behind a 242 (85-79-78) which tied her for ninth. Southwest Minnesota State's Krista Weiszhaar grabbed the last spot with a 242 of her own (84-77-81) to tie for ninth. Kerber ended up taking the two-spot based on a better final round Tuesday.
Southwest Minnesota State placed fourth with a 999, followed by Winona State (1,008), Minnesota State (1,010), Concordia St. Paul (1,041), CSU-Pueblo (1,041) and Adams State (1,058).

With gusts occasionally ranging near 40 mph, Colorado Mesa held onto their four-stroke lead with Augustana College (S.D.) now in second-place following the second round of the NCAA Division II Women's Golf Super Regional (Central) #3 Monday at the Sierra del Rio Golf Course.
Colorado Mesa once again was led by Jennifer Hilts who collected an 82 to go along with her 73 to post a 155 which is tied for first overall with Colorado Mesa collecting a 642 (313-329). Two of her teammates, Michelle Stripp in sixth with a 161 (81-80) and Jessica Berve in eighth with a 162 (81-81) round out the other three Mavericks in the top-ten. Afton Balling was only two behind Berve with a 164 (78-86) to land in a tie for 11th. Alisa Lindsay is in 32nd with a 177 (88-89).
Augustana made their move by shooting the same as Sunday with another 232 for a 646 overall. Maggie Leland is in third by herself with a 157 (77-80), followed by Allie Ostrander and Jenny Benoy, both tied for eighth with 162's. Rounding out their top-four, Emily Kvidera with a 165 (83-82) good for a tie for 13th. Kelsey Bortnem is in a tie for 41st with a 183 (87-96).
Western New Mexico is in third with a 657 (317-340) and are led by Faylyn Beyale (Fruitland, NM/Kirtland Central High School) who is tied for first with a 155 (77-78). Her 78 was the second-best round of the day. Southwest Minnesota's Krista Weiszhaar and Paige Schmidt from Winona State each posted 77's for the top round on the day. Haley Raymond (Socorro, NM/Socorro High School) remained in the top-five for Western New Mexico after her second-round 86 and first-round 74 had her card a 160 to tie for fourth. Rounding out the scoring for the Mustangs, Arrianna Estrada (Belen, NM/Belen High School) in 22nd with a 170 (81-89) and Bianca Dominguez (Deming, NM/Deming HS) in a tie for 26th with a 172 (85-87).
Southwest Minnesota State made a strong charge, as their 329 was tied for the second-best round on the day and moved them from seventh all the way to fourth and are now just 12-strokes out of the top-three with a 669. They were paced by Weiszhaar who is in a tie for sixth with a 161 (84-77).
Winona State is in fifth with a 675, followed by Minnesota State (679), CSU-Pueblo (704), Concordia St. Paul (708) and Adams State (712). The top individual was Emily Kerber from St. Cloud State with a 164 (85-79), which has her tied for 11th.
The Regional will conclude with the third and final round Tuesday morning once again beginning at 8:30 a.m. with the individuals.

Colorado Mesa, behind four players in the top-ten, hold a four-stroke lead over Western New Mexico following the first round of play at the NCAA Division II Super Regional (Central) #3 that took place at the Sierra del Rio Golf Course.
Jennifer Hilts powered Colorado Mesa with a 73, holding a one-stroke lead over Western New Mexico's Haley Raymond (Socorro, NM/Socorro High School). Colorado Mesa posted a 313 to a 317 for Western New Mexico. Augustana College (S.D.) was six-strokes off second with a 323, followed by Minnesota State (335), Winona State (337), Concordia St. Paul (338), Southwest Minnesota State (340), Adams State College (352) and CSU-Pueblo (357).
The top individual was Regis' Nicole Hulbert with an 83 to tie for 17th.
Afton Balling (78), Jessica Berve and Michelle Stripp both with 81's placed in fifth and then a tie for seventh, respectively, followed by Alisa Lindsay with an 88 in 34th.
Behind Raymond for Western New Mexico, Faylyn Beyale (Fruitland, NM/Kirtland Central High School) in third (77), Arrianna Estrada (Belen, NM/Belen High School) in a tie for seventh (81) and Bianca Dominguez (Deming, NM/Deming HS) in a tie for 24th (85) as the Mustangs played with only four.
Augustana was led by Maggie Leland's 77 to land in a tie for third and Jenny Benoy's 81 to tie for seventh.
Other golfers with top-ten results include Minnesota State's Samantha Bergmann in a tie for seventh with a 81 and Adams State's Rachel Reiling in sixth with an 80.
Round two will tee-off at 8:30 a.m. Monday morning beginning with the individuals.


 
 




ELEPHANT BUTTE, N.M. – The 2012 Division II Women's Central Regional will open play Sunday on the Sierra del Rio Golf Course hosted by Western New Mexico University, featuring some of the top golfers around vying for a chance to advance to Nationals. The opening round will begin at 12:30 p.m. (MDT) on Sunday and then 8:30 a.m. both Monday and Tuesday. 

 
From the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, Augustana  is making its fifth-straight appearance in the region tournament.  The Vikings are the two-time defending region champions, and sophomore Allie Ostrander was last year's medalist. Augustana has been ranked No. 1 in the Central Region all season. Maggie Leland was the NSIC Individual Champion at the conference tournament. Southwest Minnesota State is making its fourth straight appearance in the NCAA region tournament. Minnesota State will be in the field for the 13th time, Concordia-St. Paul, for the fourth-straight year, will be in the regional field and Winona State will be in for the second consecutive year. St. Cloud State will have one individual competing in the field.

 
From the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, Golfer of the Year Faylyn Beyale (Fruitland, NM/Kirtland Central High School) from Western New Mexico tallied an overall score of 456 and was 18-strokes better than the second-place golfer in the conference which was teammate Haley Raymond (Socorro, NM/Socorro High School). Beyale won the RMAC #1 and RMAC #2. Freshman of the Year Maressa McClintock from Adams State who placed 13th at the RMAC Championships and her fifth-place finish at the RMAC #2 helped Adams take second place. CSU-Pueblo won the RMAC Championships guided by Coach of the Year Greg Dillon, which was the school's first-ever conference title. Along with Western New Mexico, Adams State and CSU-Pueblo, Colorado Mesa will also be participating in the Regionals from the RMAC. Colorado Christian and Regis will have individuals competing in the field.


Each super regional will consist of both team and individual competition conducted concurrently with nine teams and four individuals from non-qualifying teams at each site. All participants will compete throughout the 54 holes of competition. The top three teams along with the top three individuals not with a team from each super regional will advance to the championships.
The 2012 NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships will be held May 16-19, at Persimmon Ridge Golf Course in Louisville, Ky. The championships will consist of both team and individual competition conducted concurrently.
