In two fields filled with prominent NCAA Division I programs, the Mustangs faced an uphill battle on the cross country course in Flagstaff, Arizona today. WNMU was in the back of the field in the university division for both the men and women. The men did, however, place ahead of two Phoenix-area community colleges in the overall standings.
Northern Arizona took the trophy home for the men. The University of Arizona won the women's race.
For the Mustangs on the men's side,
Timo Kilp (Kose Harju, Estonia, Audentes Sports School) was the first purple uniform to come across the finish line. He placed 35th out of 93 runners in a time of 29:09.1.
Michael Montoya (Albuquerque, NM, Manzano High School) showed up about one minute later to finish 46th.
Lone returner
Matt Snay (Kingman, AZ, Kingman High School, Mohave Community College) finished 61st with a time of 31:20.8. The remainder of the team came in a close pack to finish 71st, 74th, and 77th.
For the women, transfer
Flor Luna (El Paso, TX, Montwood High School, El Paso Community College) showed her potential in the first race of the year. She placed 24th out of 90 participants. She completed the 5K race in 20:13.2.
Nicole Luna (Pueblo of Laguna, NM, Laguna-Acoma High School) was next in for the Mustangs. She finished 65th and posted a time of 22:45.6.
Sheilah Koskey (Eldoret, Kenya, Moi Forces Academy) was next and placed 81st (24:41.1) followed by
Samantha Lopez (Albuquerque, NM, Del Norte High School, Lamar Community College) (84th, 24:41.1) and
Sarah Hall (Florence, AZ, Florence High School, Glendale Community College) (25:36.5).
