Four softball student-athletes were named to the 2010 RMAC All-Academic Teams today. Sophomore
Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley High School) was named First Team while junior
Brittany Shannon (Silver City, NM, Silver High School, New Mexico State University), seniors
Rebecca Reynolds (Benson, AZ, Benson High School),
Courtney Reyes (Alamogordo, NM, Alamogordo High School), and
Kortney Smith (Maricopa, AZ, Marana High School, Central Arizona Community College) were all named to the Honor Roll.
Barnes, who maintains a 3.68 grade point average (GPA) as a nursing major, leads the Mustangs in batting average (.410), slugging percentage (.795), runs batted in (48), homeruns (15), total bases (97), and is in a three-way tie for first in hits (50). She is 10 for 10 in stolen bases, placing her second on the team. She has an on-base percentage of .414 and has scored 32 runs, both good for third on the team. She only has six strikeouts in 122 at-bats.
In the RMAC, Barnes is sixth in batting average, fourth in slugging percentage, eighth in runs scored, tied for third in hits, first in runs batted in, first in homeruns, and first in total bases.
Shannon is majoring in education and holds a 3.34 GPA. She is one of five pitchers for the Mustangs. In her 30.1 innings of work, she has struck out 16 and recorded two wins.
Elementary education major Reynolds has a 3.42 GPA while student teaching and playing softball. Reynolds, who plays first base, leads the team in putouts (262), has the second best fielding percentage (.986), and is tied for second on the team in doubles (7).
Also an education major, Reyes has a 3.35 GPA. In the recent sweep over Adams State, Reyes went 4-11 in the series with three RBIs and three runs scored. The senior is fourth in fielding percentage for WNMU (.980).
From Maricopa, Arizona, Smith maintains a 3.41 GPA while majoring in mathematics. Currently, Smith is hitting .307 with a slugging percentage of .486. She has scored 35 times, which ranks her second for WNMU, and is 16 for 18 in stolen bases, making her the leader in stolen bases for the team. She also has a fielding percentage of .982.
To qualify for RMAC All-Academic, student-athletes must have a GPA of 3.30 or better, be a starter or reserve, and completed two consecutive semesters or three quarters at their current institution. Graduate students must have earned a 3.30 in their undergrad and graduate classes. The listed GPA is what the student-athletes had earned prior to softball season beginning. RMAC sports information directors at schools that sponsor the sport of softball selected First and Second Team All-Academic.
Cassie Humphrey of Chadron State was awarded unanimously Player of the Year.
