WNMU Gives Up 17-Point Lead

Senior Derrick Perrault
The Mustangs were up 24-7 at the top of the second quarter but the University of Nebraska – Kearney outscored WNMU 49-7 the remainder of the game. The Lopers topped WNMU, 56-31, winning their 17th straight RMAC game and winning for a 24th time in the last 28 games.

WNMU is now 3-6 overall and 2-5 in conference play. They hope to bounce back with a win against New Mexico Highlands University next weekend. The Cowboys are 1-7 overall and 1-5 in the RMAC (records prior to today's results).

The Mustangs capitalized early after two key Loper turnovers. On the opening Kearney drive, quarterback Jake Spitzlberger was blinded and threw the ball directly into the hands of wide open Derrick Perrault (San Diego, CA, Helix High School, Southwestern College). Perrault ran the ball back 30 yards to the UNK24. The Mustangs offense gained no yards on the defense's fortune, but kicker Kameron Drawhorn (San Diego, CA, Fallbrook High School) tacked three points on the board with a 42-yard field goal.

On third down and one on the Lopers' next drive, WNMU's Jacob Cross (Bakersfield, CA, Centennial High School, Bakersfield Junior College) stripped the ball out of Brendan Liess' hands for another great WNMU opportunity. This time Chris Voller (Albuquerque, NM, Valley High School) put the offense to work and threw two consecutive passes to Salvador Garcia (Anthony, TX, Anthony High School) for 14 yards and the touchdown.

The Mustang defense didn't force a third Kearney turnover, but they did something equally as nice. The Lopers were held to just three plays and nine yards and were forced to punt. Voller then marched the team 41 yards before Antoine Young (Oakland, CA, Encinal High School, Chabot College) stepped in as quarterback to finish the drive with his own 14-yard rushing touchdown. The Mustangs were up 17-0.

Kearny finally put something together in the closing minutes of the first quarter to tally their first touchdown of the day. It didn't take long, though, to extend the Mustang lead back to 17. With WNMU on the UNK2 on the first play of the second quarter, Kevin Breaker (Stockton, CA, Lincoln High School, Delta College) found room down the middle to put another six points on the board. Drawhorn tacked on the extra point. The kicker was perfect on his three attempts.

The Lopers then put things into high gear. They scored five straight touchdowns over the next 23 minutes to go up 42-24. WNMU finally answered with 3:32 left in the third quarter. Voller threw five straight passes and ended it with a 26-yard completion to Christopher Miranda (Peoria, AZ, Peoria High School, Phoenix Community College) for his first touchdown of the season.

As insurance, Kearney posted two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Kearney's Spitzlberger went 21-30-1 in the air for 298 yards and recorded three touchdowns. His main receivers were Shane Carraher and Kyle Kaiser who combined for 233 yards. Running back Brendan Liess averaged 4.9 yards per carry (22 carries, 107 yards).

WNMU's Voller finished the day with zero interceptions (19-32-0), 193 yards, and two touchdowns. Markis Sumpter (Oceanside, CA, Fallbrook High School) was Voller's main target. He had five receptions for 68 yards. Breaker rushed for 43 yards on 14 carries.

Defensively, Perrault led all players with 14 tackles, one fumble return, and one interception. Cross followed with 13 tackles and one forced fumble. Overall, the WNMU defense was busy. They were on the field 15 more minutes than the offense and produced 103 tackles compared to Kearney's 58.
