On a rainy, cool day at Buffalo Park in Flagstaff, Arizona, the WNMU cross country teams beared the elements to place ahead of Grand Canyon University in both the men's and women's races. Overall, the WNMU women's team finished seventh. The men did slightly better and came in sixth.
Northern Arizona senior Veronica Pohl captured the women's individual title when she finished the 5,000m race in 17:16, and Northern Arizona sophomore Diego Estrada took the men's title with a time of 24:57, 1:11 seconds better than his time last year.
With the threat of rain looming, the women hit the course just before 1:30 p.m. WNMU newcomer
Nicole Luna (Pueblo of Laguna, NM, Laguna-Acoma High School) game across the finish line first for the Mustangs in a time of 20:43.1 to place 39th. She was followed by
Amy Roybal (Pojoaque Valley, NM, Pojoaque Valley High School) (21:01.6, 42nd),
Cassandra Sanchez (Acoma Pueblo, NM, Laguna Acoma High School) (21:26.1, 46th), and
Sheilah Koskey (Eldoret, Kenya, Moi Forces Academy) (22:17.9). Rounding out the scoring for the Mustangs was redshirt volleyballer, turn cross country runner,
Jennifer Marshall (Las Cruces, NM, Onate High School) who posted a time of 28:09.3.
A third of the way through the men's race, a downpour ensued, leaving the competitors soaked as they finished the course.
Kempton Jackson (Gallup, NM, Gallup High School) was the first Mustang to cross the finish line. He finished 26th after running an impressive 27:23.4.
Tyler Pino (Acoma Pueblo, NM, Laguna-Acoma High School) and
Matt Snay (Kingman, AZ, Kingman High School, Mohave Community College) followed Jackson for 40th and 43rd place respectively. The two ran approximately 18 seconds apart.
Donavan Jackson (Gallup, NM, Gallup High School) and
Wilton Atkins (Wanganui, New Zealand, Wanganui Collegiate School, University of North Alabama) concluded the scoring with 53rd and 66th place respectively.
