The Mustang cross country runners had better luck at the 29th Annual UC Riverside Cross Country Invitational in Riverside Saturday morning than they did their previous meet. The women finished 13th out of 15 teams with an average time of 23:03.22. The men finished 24th out of 30 teams with an average time of 28:03.94.
The UC Riverside women's cross country team took home the crown. Azusa Pacific's Jacky Kipwambok won individual honors with a course record time of 16:29.4.
Crossing the finish line first for the Mustangs was freshman
Nicole Luna (Pueblo of Laguna, NM, Laguna-Acoma High School). She posted a time of 20:38.6 to earn herself 75th place.
Cassandra Sanchez (Acoma Pueblo, NM, Laguna Acoma High School) finished about a minute after Luna with a time of 21:39.4, which rewarded her a 109th finish.
Sheilah Koskey (Eldoret, Kenya, Moi Forces Academy) and
Amy Roybal (Pojoaque Valley, NM, Pojoaque Valley High School) finished 116th and 117th respectively. Freshman
Jennifer Marshall (Las Cruces, NM, Onate High School) was the last to finish for the Mustangs collecting a time of 29:04.
In the men's race, BYU showed why they came into the meet ranked 12th in the nation as they placed five runners in the top seven spots and eight in the top 14. BYU's Miles Batty took individual honors finishing the 8k course in 23:41.1.
Senior
Kempton Jackson (Gallup, NM, Gallup High School) came out on top for WNMU this meet, finishing 129th and posting a time of 26:40.5.
Matt Snay (Kingman, AZ, Kingman High School, Mohave Community College) wasn't too far behind him crossing the finish line in 157th place and receiving a time of 27:07.4.
Only 13 seconds separated
Wilton Atkins (Wanganui, New Zealand, Wanganui Collegiate School, University of North Alabama) and
Tyler Pino (Acoma Pueblo, NM, Laguna-Acoma High School) in Saturday's race as they finished 239th and 250th respectively.
Donavan Jackson (Gallup, NM, Gallup High School) and
Dustin Padilla (Santa Clara, NM, Cobre High School, New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology) were the final two Mustangs to cross the finish line.
