The WNMU Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Honor Student-Athletes have been selected for the 2008-2009 school year. This year's WNMU recipients are women's basketball player Audra Major (Socorro, NM, Socorro High School, Midland Community College) and men's cross country and tennis student-athlete Wilton Atkins (Wanganui, New Zealand, Wanganui Collegiate School, University of North Alabama).

Major, a junior, averaged 16.9 points in her 33:12 minutes a game this season, placing her fifth in the conference in scoring and sixth in the conference in minutes played. Major was also third in the conference in rebounding with 9.1 boards per game. Almost four of those boards came at the offensive end to lead the RMAC. Overall, Major shot .522 percent from the floor and .784 from the charity stripe.

Throughout the season, Major posted seven double-doubles. Her best game came on WNMU's home court versus Grand Canyon University. She recorded 25 points and 18 rebounds in the victory.

Major earned five awards throughout the year. She earned a spot on the First Team All-West RMAC and the Division II Women's Basketball All-Central Region Second Team. She also received two West Division Player of the Week nods and took up a spot on the RMAC First-Team All-Academic roster.

Major finishes the 2008-2009 season with a 3.34 overall GPA.

Originally a tennis student-athlete, Atkins decided to take up cross country running this year. He made huge strides throughout the season as this was his first experience running long distance. The tennis player turned runner finished second for the Mustangs at the RMAC Championships in a time of 30:06.1 to finish 70th. For his efforts, Atkins was placed on the Academic All-RMAC Honorable Mention Team.

Atkins then made the transition back to the tennis courts and had success almost immediately. He was named the RMAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week on March 12. That week Atkins came from behind in both singles and doubles matches against Division I Northern Colorado in three sets in No. 2 singles and an impressive No. 2 doubles win with partner Emmanuel Hecher (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Pitagoras), 8-2.

Throughout the season, Atkins found time at No. 2 and 3 singles. He finished the year (including the non-traditional fall season) 17-12.

Atkins finishes the 2008-2009 season with a 3.40 overall GPA.

To be eligible for the RMAC Honor-Student Athlete award, individuals must be an athlete in one of the conference sponsored championship sports; carry at least a 3.20 grade point average (GPA); be either a starter or key reserve on their respective team; be of good character and must have participated at the active member institution for two (2) or more seasons in at least one (1) sport.
