The WNMU volleyball team ended their season Thursday night after falling to the No. 3 University of Nebraska – Kearney in three straight sets in the first round of the RMAC Tournament in Kearney, Nebraska (25-21, 25-19, 25-19).
The Mustangs started off strong in the first set, hitting .361, but the Lopers hit equally as well with a .349 hitting percentage. WNMU saw the lead twice very early on in the set, but then the Lopers went on a series of runs to spread the score. The Mustangs were able to hold off set point five separate times. The set was finally capped off with a UNK Jeri Walkowiak kill.
WNMU never saw the lead in the second set. The purple and gold struggled at the net, recording eight errors in the set. They also had problems with service reception. It ended up being the demise for the Mustangs. In set three, UNK's Shelby Workman posted three straight service aces to take a 9-3 lead. WNMU could never recover. Overall, the Lopers posted eight aces.
Junior
Natali Murdock (Phoenix, AZ, Pinnacle High School) closed out the season with 11 kills and a .321 hitting percentage to lead the team. Senior
Ellen East (Pomerene, AZ, Benson High School, Yavapai Community College) led the team in assists (28), aces (2), and blocks (4 BA).
Defensively,
Marilee Frost (Long Beach, CA, Robert A. Millikan High School) notched 14 digs. She tied with UNK's Katlyn Heiserman for the match high.
