The WNMU Mustang cross country teams fared well at the UC – San Diego Triton Classic on Saturday. The Mustangs finished sixth out of eight teams in the 10K men's race, while the women took 11th out of 13 squads in their 6K event.
Senior
Kempton Jackson (Gallup, NM, Gallup High School) had a strong performance once again for the Mustangs, finishing 31st out of the field of 84 runners with a time of 35:18.9. Transfer student
Matt Snay (Kingman, AZ, Kingman High School, Mohave Community College) was the next Mustang to cross the line, placing 38th. Running together was
Wilton Atkins (Wanganui, New Zealand, Wanganui Collegiate School, University of North Alabama) and
Tyler Pino (Acoma Pueblo, NM, Laguna-Acoma High School), who finished 54th and 55th respectively and just one second apart.
Donavan Jackson (Gallup, NM/Gallup High School) capped the scoring for WNMU. He finished 68th with a time of 37:51.9.
Central Arizona's Henry Lelei was the top individual finisher, breaking the tape with an impressive time of 31:11.4. His time was over 48 seconds fastest than Cal Poly Pomona's Matt Prentice, who placed second at 31:59.6. Matt Pieterson of the University of Victoria finished third at 32:11.7, while Pomona's Jersain Torres clocked in at 32:18.1 to take fourth.
Cal Poly Pomona had four runners finish in the top 10 and scored 29 points to win the team title on the men's side. UCSD tallied 64 points for second and held off Victoria by four points, while Central Arizona claimed fourth place with 88.
On the women's side,
Cassandra Sanchez (Acoma Pueblo, NM, Laguna Acoma High School) found her stride and led the Mustangs, placing 60th out of 122 runners. She finished the 6K in just 25:27.4. She was followed by
Nicole Luna (Pueblo of Laguna, NM, Laguna-Acoma High School) and
Sheilah Koskey (Eldoret, Kenya, Moi Forces Academy) who placed 68th and 91st respectively. The final two Mustang scorers were
Amy Roybal (Pojoaque Valley, NM, Pojoaque Valley High School) and Tana Holtorf. Roybal placed 97th after coming across the finish line in 28:04.2. Holtorf, though cross country is not her primary sport, finished a strong 106th.
Central Arizona won the women's race, placing four runners in the top 10. After finishing second at the Triton Classic in 2008, Rose Tanui broke the tape for CAC, finishing with a time of 21:38.0 to easily outdistance the rest of the field. The University of Victoria's Deirdre Moran finished second at 22:11.8, four seconds ahead of Central Arizona's Violah Lagat, who took third.
Central Arizona scored a total of 58 points to finish 10 in front of second place UC Irvine, while the University of Victoria finished third with 78 points in what proved to be a very close race.
